Further details of the Home Alone reboot have emerged and, controversially, it looks like it will have a much grittier tone than the original as the grown-up Kevin takes to the streets as a vigilante who battles criminals with extreme force.
“The question we asked ourselves was ‘what would that little boy, who so enjoyed torturing a pair of hapless burglars, be like today?” explained producer Kelly Grace.
“It seems clear to me that those events with the Wet Bandits would be formative experiences that would define the man he is today – a cold, emotionless vigilante who hunts down criminals without mercy.”
The first teaser shows the familiar Home Alone house, wreathed in Christmas lights, as Rocking around the Christmas Tree plays. A figure is seen loading a pistol and shot gun, then attaching a number of grenades and knives to his utility belt. He pulls a balaclava over his face.
From the same outside shot of the house, we see flashes, hear gunshots and screams. We cut to the living room and see it covered in blood and the floor littered with the bodies of burglars. The front door opens and the laughter of a family is heard. As a reflex, the man cocks his shotgun and spins to point it at the family. They freeze. A little girl takes in the scene and screams.
The man peels off his balaclava and says ‘I’m Kevin, I used to live here,’ and walks out past the family, repeatedly muttering ‘I’m in good shape’ to himself.
“We think it’s a real Home Alone for our times,” said Ms Grace.
It is thought that, if the Home Alone reboot proves successful, then Disney+ will look at a new reboot of It’s a Wonderful Life, in which George Bailey teams up with Henry Potter to make the dream of the corrupt, violent Pottersville a reality.
