There was disappointment amongst male actors at the news that Greta Gerwig’s new film Little Women will be mainly just women talking and, besides a token love interest, will feature no roles of substance for men.
The director’s new project will be the follow-up to the similarly female-oriented Lady Bird.
“Well, okay, Lady Bird had women in the lead roles, but at least it had a decent male character in the Dad,” said exasperated actor Leo Pitt.
“Little Women hasn’t even got that. I mean, there’s that John guy, the tutor, but he’s only really in it as a romantic plot device, something to trigger character development for the women.
“There really isn’t anything substantive here if you’re a male actor.”
Leo is concerned that a trend is appearing.
“Well, look, if you look at this and Lady Bird and Ocean’s Eight, then that’s, what, three films in the last year that have just almost completely forgotten that another gender exists.
“Three! Okay, out of two and a half thousand films made in a year. Okay that doesn’t sound like much, but next year it could be four, and then five and then, in a thousand years, we could have the nightmare scenario of half of all films being mainly about women.
“And then us male actors may as well start just wearing bras and doing sewing.”
Little Women is currently casting and likely secure a limited release during the next major football tournament.
