The new World Cup download for Fifa 18 is to feature a special Russia-themed undercurrent of homophobia and overt threat of violence.
“This is brilliant,” said Fifa fan Gary Wright.
“I could never afford to go to the actual World Cup in Russia, so to have all the stadiums, branding, fixtures, worry that someone will notice my sexuality and all-pervading threat of brutal violence on a console in my bedroom is fantastic.”
Ian Shearer heads up the team at EA who made the special download.
“It was tough. It was much tougher than Brazil,” he said.
“I mean, how do you really translate an undercurrent of homophobia into a videogame?
“But, you know, we worked hard. We spoke to some homophobes, and we think we’ve really captured it.
“If you’re gay and you play this game, you will feel really quite paranoid and if you’re straight then you’ll just feel really queasy about being part of it.
“As for the constant threat of violence? That’s quite innovative, we’ve got a couple of tough men to identify a small subsection of people who own the game and go and punch them in the face.
“Once word gets round on the forums, that threat will be available for everyone.”
The download is available from the end of May, and will bring all the magic, menace and really nasty anti-gay sentiment of a World Cup in Russia to everyone who currently owns a copy of Fifa 18.
