Leading medical experts have clarified that, where possible, gamers should select World of Warcraft characters that have ranged combat specialisations such as mages and hunters.
“A good mage will spend the majority of time in a battle some three or four metres from enemy combatants,” explained Doctor Yrel, an expert in medical matters in games.
“This is very good for social distancing as it is thought unlikely that the current coronavirus cannot be transmitted over distances greater than two metres.
“Even so, one should be aware when battling any ogres or giants that their sheer size could see them more infectious from even greater distances, so if you find yourself fighting one then, even as a ranged character, it is advised to stand five, perhaps even six metres away.”
Doctor Yrel, advised completely avoiding melee characters for as long as the crisis lasts.
“I mean, unless you really have to, then don’t select melee characters,” she confirmed.
“If you are insistent, then make sure you have hand sanitizer equipped at all times and apply it after every encounter.”
Hand sanitizer is currently out of stock from most vendors in Azeroth, but can still be purchased at the auction house, although for a heavily inflated price.
“You might want to think about equipping a face mask, although, to be honest, they haven’t shown any great protection from the virus.
“I think it’s just best to steer clear of warriors, monks, and rogues for the moment.”
One controversial area of World of Warcraft character selection has been around hunters and specifically the morality of having a pet fight melee battles, at danger of infection, whilst the hunter stands well back, out of any infection range.
“Oh, I don’t think we should worry about that,” said Doctor Yrel.
“After all, the pets aren’t real animals, they’re just computer game avatars of animals, and so very unlikely to be susceptible to the virus.”
