It seems that Disney’s live-action remakes of its classic films shows no sign of stopping with the announcement that Pirates of the Caribbean will be remade with real live actors.
It had been thought that it would be impossible to render a lifelike version of Johnny Depp in a live-action setting, but the technology demonstrated with The Lion King has proved that anything is possible.
“You know, I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it myself,” explained director Stewart James.
“But they showed me some test footage and godammnit if you wouldn’t believe that it was Johnny Depp, Keira Knightly and the elf guy all there in a real-life context, you know? They were just there on this ship and the whole thing was completely convincing.”
The process to make a live-action Pirates of the Caribbean will be a complicated one.
“Man, yeah, it’s not easy. You get a bunch of actors, and they’re in these special green suits. They act out the scenes together and then using a computer, we get images of Johnny, Keira, and elf guy and super-impose them on the actors, then final you get the real experts in and they manipulate the expressions and mouths of the actors to look as if they’re really speaking the lines.
“It’s amazing, it genuinely looks like a live-action Pirates of the Caribbean.”
If the film is as successful as seems likely, Disney have promised to reward fans by not remaking any of the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels.
