Concern at Mum’s determination to watch Sunday evening costume drama

There was widespread concern throughout the household that Mum seems determined to watch the new BBC Sunday evening costume drama.

The disquiet began earlier in the week when Mum said ‘Ooo, that looks lovely. I think I’d like to watch that’ as a trailer for the costume drama was shown before something good.

It had been assumed that, by the weekend, Mum will have forgotten about it and defaulted to her standard ‘I don’t mind what we watch, I’m just glad we’re all watching something together.’

However, this is looking increasingly unlikely.

“It looks bad, really bad,” said the daughter, at a hastily called emergency family meeting.

“She’s mentioned this Sunday evening costume drama a bunch of times. I really think she’s going to go through with it, I think she’s going to watch this thing and expect us all there with her.”

The costume drama appears to feature a wide variety of well-loved character actors playing people with names like Mrs Tuppence and Lord Bumblington all discussing whether or not a young woman in a bonnet should marry a young man or a slightly older, wealthier man.

“It looks bloody purgatorial is what it bloody does,” exclaimed Dad.

“I bet it goes on from now until Christmas and the only action in the whole thing is a butler dropping a spoon.”

He did, heroically, suggest a plan.

“There’s no reason we should all suffer. You kids should go to your rooms and pretend to be working on some homework, I can stay down here with Mum. That should be enough.”

The son suggested a technological solution might be the answer. He could disable the ariel on the television for the evening so that it can’t receive terrestrial channels.

“It’s a good idea, lad. But you’re forgetting the bloody iPlayer. She’ll just have us watch it over the internet. No, it’s no good. It looks like she’s going to watch it. I’ll do my best for you, but I make no promises.”

It is understood that the last time that Mum wanted to watch something was 2011, when William and Kate got married.
