Avatar 2 to use revolutionary tech to make Na’vi actors appear human

Floating platforms of earth, an alien world. Avatar 2 to use revolutionary tech

James Cameron has announced that Avatar 2 will use new revolutionary tech that will allow Na’vi actors to appear as humans.

The first film, some ten years ago, stunned the world with special effects that made human actors look like convincing Na’vi, but it had been thought impossible to transform Na’vi actors into humans.

“The trickiest thing was always the height. Na’vi are very tall,” explained the Titanic legend.

“So, that was the first problem we had to deal with because, even if you were to make a Na’vi look like a human, then they’d be a really, really tall human and, unless we were going to make Avatar 2 about basketball, that wasn’t going to work.

“And, we decided pretty early on that it wasn’t going to be about baseball.”

They tried a number of ideas to deal with the size of the Na’vi.

“Putting the Na’vi in a hole, cutting their legs off at the knee. Nothing really worked.

When they finally hit on a solution, it was a simple one.

“Things that are far away look smaller,” laughed Mr Cameron.

“So, once we filmed a Na’vi a little further away, then they looked to be the same size as a human actor. From there, we were able to use computers to change the appearance of a Na’vi actor.

“The ears were tricky, they always are. But once we’d got them right, it looked pretty good.”

It is thought that the same special effects team are now working on a way to use CGI to make Pandora look like Earth, leading to rumours that the third film could be set closer to home.
