Adam Woodyatt has revealed that he will continue in his role of Ian Beale on popular London soap opera Eastenders after missing out on the lead role in Star Wars: Starfighter to Ryan Gosling.
“I am disappointed, yes,” admitted the Albert Square legend.
“I can be a wisecracking, charming space pilot. I just don’t get the chance to show that side of me so much in Eastenders. There isn’t a lot of scope for an intergalactic dogfight with the Empire while trading witty repartee with my droid when I’m playing a man who owns a chippy.
“I bet you that if Ryan Gosling played a man who ran an east-end chippy, people would be struggling to see him as a Star Wars hero.”
Adam revealed that it wasn’t the first time he’d tried for Jedi stardom
“Anakin Skywalker, I went for that. A tragic descent into evil? Could have done that, no bother. Particularly after that storyline when I tried to have Wellard put down.
“Mace Windu. They said I was too cool and charismatic and went for Samuel L Jackson instead. Then Chewbacca in the sequel trilogy. Wasn’t hairy enough, apparently.”
Adam insisted that he was happy enough with Eastenders though.
“It’s the Star Wars films that are missing out. Not me. I’ve been in three thousand eight hundred and nine episodes of Eastenders. Harrison Ford’s been in four episodes of Star Wars. So, who’s the really winner?”
However, should the franchise ever decide to make a prequel set thousands of years before anyone went into space Adam stands ready to help.
“If they want to set an episode on earth, before anyone gets the Force? I could be a bloke who runs a chippy.”
