Shaving Ryan’s Privates was a hugely successful work of pre-internet pornography that many people still look back on fondly.
“Yeah, everyone loved it,” said star Jason Squire in a 2005 Wogan interview.
“You know, it was a pretty simple story – Ryan shaves his bits, has a bunch of sex, but it really touched people, you know?”
A marriage of simple yet affecting story, innovative direction, and graphic depiction of hardcore sex acts saw Shaving Ryan’s Privates go on to be garnered with awards and become one of the most popular porn films of the nineties.
However, everyone was stunned in 1998 when it got its own mainstream war film parody, and that parody was made by none other than Steven Spielberg.
“Yeah, we were amazed when Saving Private Ryan came out,” laughs Squire.
“I mean, they’d clearly just come up with a lazy pun on Shaving Ryan’s Privates and then just slapped a standard man-on-mission story on it.
“But, you know, it was Spielberg, though. Actual Steven Spielberg. Amazing.”
Throughout the nineties, many porn films suffered a similar fate, with classic porn titles like Forrest Hump, Womb Raider, and The Porn Identity all being adapted for mainstream film parodies.
“We should be flattered, really,” continued Squire.
“I mean some of those films are pretty good. Jurassic Park will never be patch on Jurassic Pork, of course, but Edward Scissorhands was definitely up there with Edward Penishands.
“I just wish we’d got a bit more credit for the work we put it in to make these big films what they were,” said Squire, sadly.
Nowadays, mainstream films are taking less and less inspiration from porn films.
However, the popularity of TV boxsets has led to small screen inspiration from the porn industry, with Game of Bones and Tittie and the Tittie proving particularly fertile grounds for recent mainstream titles, and there are high hopes for a second season based on the seminal Breastworld.
