James Gunn’s Superman is still over a year away from release, but excitement for the film has begun to build, encouraged by a rumour that suggests the film may finally address the mysterious origins of the character.
“I always assumed that Superman got his powers after eating some radioactive soup,” said Oxford University’s professor of Superman Stewart James.
“So, if we’re going to finally see the origin story of Superman, I think it’ll be that Clark Kent was a normal man out for a meal and he goes to this restaurant, but the restaurant is run by criminals and they’re illegally disposing of radioactive material by putting it in the soup. Clark eats the radioactive soup and becomes Superman.”
However, James Gunn has commented on rumours of, finally, getting a Superman origin story.
“Imagine a world in which every different Superman film went through a bit at the beginning where they explained how got given his incredible powers. They would be a bit boring, wouldn’t it? A bit of a waste of everyone’s time. I’m sure everyone is much happier just cracking on with the story.”
This seems to hint that, despite all the rumours, the origin of the Man of Steel seems likely to remain a mystery.
Next week: we investigate the rumour that a new Spiderman film could, finally, reveal the story of how the Spiderman got his incredible spider-powers.
