Jurassic World Rebirth has been one of the hits of the year and that is in no small part down to the startling CGI, including the most realistic Scarlett Johansson yet seen on screen.
“Yeah, we knew we had something special there,” explained Stewart James, the CGI mastermind on the film.
“I would say that the Scarlett Johansson in the film is as perfect as it gets. Anyone watching that is going to think it’s a real Scarlett Johansson.”
Stewart shared the secrets of creating such a stunning piece of CGI.
“Well, it’s not easy. First, the motion capture, in which we take an actress of roughly the same size as Scarlett Johansson and record her movements, and facial expressions. Then we have the best CGI artists work up images of Scarlett Johansson based on the information we have. Finally, we use copy and paste to drop those images over the image of the actress who went through the MoCap process.
“After that, you cross your fingers and hope. In this case, it worked perfectly, and we have a pretty incredible Scarlett Johansson up on screen. It was hard work, but when you see people watch the film, and the look of absolute wonder on their face when Scarlett Johansson turns up makes it worthwhile.”
Despite the hard work, it’s still simpler than the pre-CGI days of creating a convincing Scarlett Johansson, which required samples of Scarlett Johansson DNA being extracted from amber, and using that sample to create a lifelike clone of the Lost in Translation star.
