Lucasfilm to release Star Wars ‘making of’ documentaries with new CGI effects

Lucasfilm has announced that it will be rereleasing some of its iconic Star Wars ‘making of’ documentaries with newly developed CGI to enhance the experience.

They will begin with 1977’s ‘The making of Star Wars’ which was a mainstay of bank holidays in the early eighties and has appeared on several DVDs and Blu-rays.

“It was great at the time,” explained George Lucas, who has overseen the new CGI overhaul.

“You really get an insight into how those old model-makers worked at the time. But by using CGI, we can achieve now what we couldn’t achieve then and make their work look utterly ground-breaking   and ahead of its time.

“For example, in the original version of the documentaries, you can see how the Millennium Falcon was an impressive 2-foot long model. But, with CGI, we can make it look like that was 4-foot long model, which is a far superior experience.

“Take the Death Star – now, that was a model hung by thread to make it appear as if it were floating in space. We can use CGI to remove the thread from the making-of documentary to make it look like those old special effects guys were psychic wizards just sort of holding the Death Star in the air with their minds.”

Once the new remastered ‘making of’ documentaries have been released, they will be followed several months later by some Star Wars ‘making of’ documentaries ‘making of’ documentaries that will give insight into how the CGI was added to the original ‘making of’ documentaries.

It is expected the new ‘making of’ documentaries will use CGI to really highlight how impressive the CGI added to the original ‘making of’ documentaries really was.
