The Institute of Festive Cinema has officially conferred Christmas Film status on eighties classics When Harry Met Sally and Lethal Weapon.
The Godfather was refused Christmas film status once again. The institute conceded that a large portion of the film did take place at Christmas but the piece was too remorselessly grim to be considered Christmassy.
A decision on The Long Kiss Goodnight was postponed until next year.
The announcement means that people will be able to legally enjoy both films whilst wrapping presents or decorating Christmas Trees.
“This is fantastic news,” said Stewart James, a Lethal Weapon fan.
“I’ve always thought it was a Christmas film. The whole thing takes place at Christmas, it’s got Christmas music, and in-between the violence and swearing is a nice story about redemption and friendship.
“So, it’s always been disappointing to be prohibited from watching it during December.”
When Harry Met Sally is one of Kelly Grace’s favourite films.
“I love it, and the whole ending is at New Year, so I always really want to watch it on New Year’s Eve,” she said.
“I did actually pop the DVD on one year, I didn’t think anyone would find out. Obviously, they did, but luckily, I got away with just a fine as I only watched that last scene at the party.”
Controversially, there was still no word from the Institute on whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas Film.
This means that, once again this year, the only way to enjoy what many people consider to be one of the quintessential classic Christmas films over the festive season will be at small, illegal underground Die Hard clubs under the threat of arrest and possible imprisonment.
