A new trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s much anticipated Frankenstein shows the famed monster patiently explaining that it’s the doctor who is called Frankenstein whereas he is just known as the creature.
“This is actually a serious adaptation of a classic work of literature”, explained the Nightmare Alley director.
“This is not a film for the sort of people who think that Frankenstein is the monster, so I wanted to make that clear right from the start.”
The trailer is explicit. The creature crashes through the forest and comes face-to-face with a little peasant girl. The girl screams – “oh no! It’s a big Frankenstein.” The creature immediately corrects the girl – “Actually, Frankenstein is the name of the scientist, I don’t have a name. I’m just ‘the creature’ which actually gives further pathos to my plight.”
The teaser has already attracted the attention of serious film fans.
“I’m a serious film fan,” said Stewart James.
“So, naturally, I prefer films with subtitles about old men being disillusioned about things. Films about monsters are normally just really stupid.
“I might give this film a try though. They know that Frankenstein isn’t actually the monster. They must be quite intelligent. Like me. I certainly wouldn’t go and see this if it looked like the sort of film for people who thought the monster was called Frankenstein. Interesting.”
The film should also gain further credibility amongst the cognoscenti by being a bit sad, having all the bloody monster-killings filmed quite artistically, and having sub-text.
