2012

The Mayans decide to extract their terrible revenge on the world by making particles of the sun sneak into the earth’s core so it boils (or something). California falls off. Yellowstone blows up. Something awful probably happens to Paris. Paris never does well in these sorts of films. Everyone decides the best course of action is to go and live on a big ship with Oliver Platt. Can’t remember how it ends, but I would imagine everything sorts itself out and they resolve to be nicer to Mayans in the future.

Trivia

To achieve the effect of California falling into the sea, producers actually pushed Wales into the sea while making everyone speak with an American accent. After a high-profile court case, they were made to put it back again.

John Cusack and Oliver Platt fought a duel at dawn with pistols on the last day of filming after Cusack insulted Platt’s honour by cheeking him during a game of chance.

A sequel was proposed in which the planet turns inside out.

An erotic spin-off ‘Late-night 2012’ was planned but, as yet, hasn’t gone into production.

Bloopers

The subway train scene briefly flying through the air during the destruction of California has Thomas the Tank Engine’s face.
