Conclave 2 confirmed: Ralph Fiennes and the gang return to put on rap musical

Following the success of the Bafta winning Conclave, a sequel has been swiftly confirmed that will see Ralph Fiennes’ Cardinal Lawrence and his friends return, but instead of choosing a new Pope, they’ll be putting on a rap musical!

“We always knew that we wanted this cast to return,” said director Edward Berger.

“But, if we were going to make a sequel, what would the story be? Would they choose another Pope? If so, what happened to the Pope they’d just chosen. What if we wanted to make it into a franchise? We’d have to keep choosing Popes and the only explanation for that would be some sort of Papal serial killer.”

Initially, the filmmakers pivoted to the idea of a conclave that would decide something, but not necessarily the Pope.

“We thought we could broaden out what they were choosing, so instead of choosing the next Pope, the conclave would choose the next singer of Iron Maiden, or what to have for dinner at the weekend, or whether a new Netflix show should get a second season, but ultimately, it felt like we were trying to shoehorn in a decision for the sake of it.”

Instead, the filmmakers ingeniously decided to change the notion of a conclave.

“Instead of this conclave deciding something, they would produce something, and what could produce the drama and intensity of the first film? Producing a rap musical.”

The film will see the new Pope want to do something to modernise the Catholic Church to make it more appealing to young people in the 21st Century. Impressed with the way Cardinal Lawrence handled the conclave from the first film, he commands they reconvene and put on a rap musical.

“We see the same conflict as the first film. Cardinal Bellini wants a modern rap musical with Doechii and Kendrick Lamar songs. Whereas Tedesco, a traditionalist, wants Run DMC and Rakim,” continued Berger.

“It seems unlikely, but a conclave for a rap musical really works.”

If Conclave 2 is the success that the first film was then further sequels are already planned with Conclave 3 seeing the gang go back in time to the wild west and Conclave 4 set to reveal that Tedesco is actually Lawrence’s father.
