The new epic World of Warcraft expansion trilogy The Worldsoul Saga will begin rather unusually in East London.
The premise of the opening expansion, The War Within, is that Horde Warchief Anduin fancies a really good night out at a lively boozer with someone on the piano raucously singing traditional old cockney songs.
“We wanted to focus a bit more on Anduin as he hasn’t really been seen since the Shadowlands expansion,” explained Barry Warcraft, the lead designer.
“He’s a bit down in the dumps, so his advisor Eitrigg goes ‘what you need is a right good old-fashioned cockney knees-up’. He then goes on to organise a party of mighty warriors, including the player character, to head to the Old Kent Road in East London.
“They start with a big meal of pie and mash and liquor, then have ten pints of beer and sing a song about an old woman’s knickers before getting off with someone unsuitable and having a fight outside a kebab shop.”
The expansion will continue to use the East London setting throughout, with Harbinger of the Void, Xal’atath, setting up his base in a room above the The White Hart in Whitechapel to control the supply of Jellied Eels and one of the major endgame raids set in the Leyton Orient football ground.
It is the first real-world location in World of Warcraft since Wrath of the Lich King, which controversially set its opening area in the High Chelmer Shopping Precinct in Chelmsford.
