Following his comments on Marvel movies, Martin Scorsese has now clarified his position on the Smurfs movies.
Since his criticism that Marvel movies were ‘not cinema,’ the only thought on many film-fans’ lips has been ‘fair enough, but what about the Smurfs?’
Initially, Scorsese attempted to dodge the Smurfs question.
“Look, I’ve just made one of the most acclaimed films of my career, can we talk about that?” He pleaded with an audience of film students at a special event to celebrate his work.
However, the tenacious students would not let it go, and shouts of ‘tell us what you think about Smurfs,’ ‘What about the Smurfs?’ and ‘Colour of Money is rubbish’ rang out.
Sighing, a resigned Scorsese answered.
“Okay, the Smurfs films are terrible. Awful. I hope they never make another one,” he said
“Except that bit in the second one where Clumsy Smurfs knocks all that stuff over. That was funny.”
He then spent several hours discussing his career during which there were funny, touching and personal revelations about how the greatest living filmmaker approaches his craft.
Within minutes #ScorseseHatesSmurfs was trending.
“I’ve lost a lot of respect for him,” said film fan Kelly Grace.
“I mean, yes, he made Mean Streets and Raging Bull, but if he can’t recognise that the Smurfs films are just a bit of light-hearted fun, then he probably doesn’t really understand films.”
With Scorsese’s opinions on Marvel and Smurfs films known, it only remains for the Taxi Driver legend to give his opinion on the Transformers franchise, Carry On films, and The Emoji Movie.
