As the hugely popular Cobra Kai returns for a fourth series, rumours are beginning to circulate that there could be a film prequel exploring the teenage life of both Johnny and Daniel.
“Everyone loves Cobra Kai, so why wouldn’t they want to do some sort of film spin-off?” said TV blogger Stewart James.
“I think fans would love to see more of Johnny and Daniel as they grew up. I mean, from what we’ve seen in the show, they clearly used to know each other. Something happened around some sort of karate competition, but what was that? That’s what the prequel should focus on.”
Kelly Grace is a Cobra Kai fan, and would love to see a prequel to replace the ‘awful’ flashbacks in the show.
“Yeah, I think most people agree the flashbacks are not to show’s strong point,” she said.
“They’re not very well filmed, and the actors playing Johnny and Daniel really don’t look like Ralph Macchio and William Zabka. In fact, if they did do a prequel, then perhaps they could go back through the show and then remove all those flashbacks and replace them with clips from the actual film.”
Although nothing has been confirmed, rumours suggest that there is an agreed plot in place.
Johnny and Daniel are best friends at school, but then Mr Miyagi, a wizard who lives in a hole, grants Daniel super-karate powers. Johnny believes the powers are evil and the pair fall out. Both enter a karate competition, but Johnny, who knows he can’t possibly compete against Daniel’s super-karate powers so instead builds a karate robot to compete instead.
“That seems to be the plot getting the most traction on the forums and there’s been no push-back from the anyone on the show, so it’ll be something like that,” said Kelly.
The prequel, most likely called Kids of Karate could go into production as early as this year and be ready for next summer.
