New Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes trailer has surprising focus on cheese and cheesemaking

The new trailer for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has surprised fans with its focus on cheese and cheesemaking amongst the apes.

The trailer begins by establishing that apes are now the dominant species across Earth with humans having regressed to a feral state. The trailer then goes on to reveal the paucity of really good quality cheese in this new world. We see apes trying and failing to make cheese and embarrassing themselves. So begins the quest of Noa, a young chimpanzee born generations after Caesar’s time, as he sets out to find a legendary human who has retained the knowledge and technology to make cheese.

“The apes have established a coherent and sophisticated society,” explained director Wes Ball.

“Or so it seems initially, but what is fascinating about this premise is that we get to ask the question -what is a sophisticated civilisation? And, perhaps even more crucial – can you really say you have a sophisticated civilisation if you can’t make a really good-quality Cheddar cheese?”

The plot will see Noa befriend a feral woman called Mae, who lives in the remnants of an artisanal cheesemakers workshop in a small town in Wisconsin. They are forced to learn to work together to find the legendary cheesemaker and protect the workshop from Proximus Caesar, a powerful chimpanzee ruler who leads a clan of apes in search of industrial cheesemaking equipment.

“The first films were great. They built a world and characters perfectly,” continued Ball

“But the one thing they never did was address how apes, in their new world, would cope with the production of cheese. So, it’s great to finally be able to tackle that question.”

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes: World of Cheese will be released in 2024.
