Robert Eggers to direct new Smurfs movie after Labyrinth sequel

Robert Eggers, the director of Nosferatu and The Lighthouse, is set to direct the new Smurfs movie after completing his Labyrinth sequel.

“I know people were surprised when I took on the Labyrinth sequel, and they’re going to be shocked that I’m making a Smurfs movie,” explained Eggers.

“But I look at the Smurfs and I see something elemental. Something dark.”

As has become his trademark, the Smurfs movie will prioritise historical accuracy.

“Smurf authenticity is going to be crucial. These aren’t going to be funky, modern Smurfs breakdancing around New York getting into scrapes. These are going to be the Smurfs of old, based as closely as possible to descriptions of Smurfs from when they first emerged in the 1970s.”

Although the origin of Smurfs is lost to time, there is still evidence of what early Smurfs looked like.

“They were knobbly and small and they lived in mushrooms. They had rudimentary system of technology that saw their leader wearing spectacles. Their social hierarchy was confusing, as was their customs of reproduction, what with only having one female Smurf.

“We do know that Smurfs battled a human wizard called Gargamel, and that will form the plot of my new film. An epic, authentic battle between Gargamel and the Smurfs. It will be bloody, violent and true to the Smurfs of old.”

The Snnurfs is currently slated to enter production next year with Bill Skarsgård set to play Gargamel, Willem Dafoe as Papa Smurf, Anya Taylor-Joy as Smurfette and Nicholas Hoult as Brainy Smurf.
