Midsommar

Florence Pugh goes on holiday with feckless boyfriend to weird foreign place where they can’t spell midsummer. Weird foreigners have weird death festival because they’re weird. Florence gets dressed up as a National Trust Garden. Feckless boyfriend does sex with a lady then dresses up as bear and gets set on fire. Probably goes to show something.

Trivia

The festival is based on the annual horticultural show in the village of Upper Bottom in Hampshire.

Florence Pugh was something of an onset prankster. When they were due to film the scene in which the old people jump onto the rock, she put a whoopee cushion under the rock which made a hilarious fart noise on each take.

The film was originally soundtracked entirely by Boney M songs, but director Ari Aster decided that would be distracting and opted for an electronic score instead.

Dani smiles at the end, not at the fate of her boyfriend, but because she’s looking forward to some nice cake.

Bloopers

Although supposedly set in Sweden, several scenes feature the four Galilean moons of Jupiter in the sky. Which could only be seen from the surface of Jupiter.

Quotes

“I thought it would be a bit warmer. Wish I’d brought a jumper.”
